Your first visit
Never had acupuncture before? That's completely normal – and there's nothing you need to prepare. Here's exactly what to expect, from booking to walking back out the door.
Before you come in
01
What to wear
Loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up above the knees and elbows. Many points sit on the arms and lower legs, so easy access helps. Often we will do a few mobility tests during our assessment.
02
Eat something
Come in having had a light meal within a few hours of your appointment. Arriving on a completely empty stomach can leave you lightheaded.
03
Arrive a few minutes early
Intake paperwork is sent to you ahead of time, but a few extra minutes means you can settle in rather than rush.
What happens in the room
-
Your first appointment runs about 90 minutes, and a good portion of that is talking. I'll ask about your main concern, but also about sleep, digestion, energy, stress, and your medical history. In Chinese medicine, these things aren't separate topics – they're all part of the same picture. I'll also check your pulse and look at your tongue, both of which give me information that symptoms alone don't. If your main compliant is pain then we will do a few tests to assess movement restrictions.
-
Based on what we've discussed, I'll place needles at points selected for you. They're single-use, sterile, and about the width of a human hair. Most people feel a brief sensation on insertion and then nothing at all. If we go into muscles that spot can feel achy for a few moments. I’ll make sure everything is comfortable and then let you rest for 20 to 30 minutes – a lot of people fall asleep. Depending on what your body needs, I may also use cupping, gua sha, or electro-acupuncture in the same session.
-
Before you leave, we'll talk about what you might feel afterward, how often to come in, and anything you can do between sessions – movement, stretches, or small adjustments that support the work. Acupuncture builds over time, so we'll set realistic expectations together rather than guessing.
Afterward
Most people leave feeling relaxed, sometimes noticeably so – plan on taking it easy for the rest of the day if you can. Some feel immediate relief, others notice changes over the following days. Mild soreness or a small bruise at a needle site is normal and fades quickly.
Drink water, skip the intense workout, and let your body settle. If anything feels off or you have questions after your visit, reach out. I'd rather hear from you than have you wonder.
Insurance & Payment
I accept most major insurance plans as well as motor vehicle accident (MVA) claims.
I highly recommend calling your health insurance provider in advance to confirm the benefits available to you. This proactive step can help you understand the specifics of your coverage. When you call your Insurance provider, here are a few questions you can ask.
1. Is acupuncture a covered benefit with my plan?
2. Are there any restrictions for what I can be seen for? For example, does my plan only cover low back pain?
3. Is there an Annual visit limit? How many visits do I get per calendar year?
4. What is my coverage start date and end date? So you can maximize the utilization of your benefits.
5. Does my deductible apply to acupuncture services? So you know how it may impact your out-of-pocket costs.
Taking these steps ensures that you have a clear understanding of your insurance coverage, helping you make informed decisions about your acupuncture treatments.
Still have questions
Reach out before booking if anything is unclear – or go ahead and schedule when you're ready.
